St. Louis NMO & MOGAD Center

Newly described diseases which can mimic multiple sclerosis

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMO) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) are two relatively recently described immune-mediated diseases of the central nervous system.

We are leaders in clinical care, basic research, and clinical trials in these newly described of neurological diseases. It is important to correctly identify these disorders because they require different treatment from multiple sclerosis.

Our services

  • Acute Relapse Treatment: The initial presentation or subsequent relapses of NMO or MOGAD can be devastating. Along with our partners at Barnes Jewish Hospital, we assist in the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of these occurrences to help get patients on the road to recovery as soon as possible.
  • Diagnostic Services: The diagnosis of these conditions includes a careful clinical history, neurological examination, neuroimaging, and blood or spinal fluid testing. Our team is ready to guide you through this sometimes complex process.
  • Novel Treatments: Until recently, there were no guidelines to treat these conditions. NMO now has FDA approved medications and we are participating in clinical trials on the first MOGAD-specific treatment. We will help you find the best treatment for your individual circumstances
